Posing Like a Pro! Tips To Help You Look Stunning

One of the biggest concerns of women who hire me is how to pose their bodies.

Everyone wants to look their best on camera right? No matter if it is a selfie or professionally hired portraits, women want to look stunning. And why shouldn’t we? We deserve it!

Let’s talk about my tried and true easy rules that ANYONE can follow. No matter your weight, height, or body type, these posing tips will make you look like the svelte bombshell you are!

Ok- Outfit selection is a different blog post because this one is clearly not doing me any favors to be perfectly honest. I didn’t want this to be easy though folks! This straight on, arms tight to my body shot is not doing my short-waisted, narrow shouldered self any good. As a result, my figure is looking pretty boxy here. As women, what do we crave? CURVES- Am I right?

Much better! For instance, I have a waist now and shoulders plus I’m minimizing areas that I am self conscious of. Let’s break down what is different and what are the tricks.

  1. I turned my hips towards the camera in a 1:00 position. What does that mean Cassy? Picture you are standing in the center of a clock where the camera is sitting at high 12:00. In other words, by positioning my front hip just slightly off from 12:00, I’m now showing my side hip and the curve of my back giving myself more dimension.
  2. I’m placing my weight on my back leg so the bulk of my body is moved away from the camera. Cameras LOVE to add weight and distort the subject especially when using wide angle lenses. In other words, by moving the weight away from the camera, I’m taking some distortion away from that front hip.
  3. I’m adding triangles with my legs and arms. As a student of photography, I learned creating triangles in your image composition add movement, interest, and balance. I have a bend in my leg and arm and the results are slimming and creates movement. Another plus? By placing my hand is about 2 inches above my hip, I define my waist and create another narrowing point on my body.

And now, for the pièce de ré·sis·tance- consider the direction where your lighting is coming from. On the left, my body is facing the light, and my back is in the shadows vs the left where my booty is facing the light. Which one makes my booty look smaller? Because I’m turning my longer, leaner areas towards the light, I’ve created a slimmer profile.

Bonus tip: This trick works to slim your face. My wonderfully round cheeks look slightly less full on the left because I’m pulling my chin out and down slightly and tilting my forehead vs my chin towards the camera. As a result, you see less chin (and under chin) and more smile!

I hope this little tutorial helped! If you have more questions- feel free to reach out!
